A Brand-New Texas State Park Opens Less Than Two Hours From Collin County

Lonestar Living Team | March 5, 2026

For the first time in more than 25 years, North Texas has a brand-new state park to explore, and it's surprisingly close to home. Palo Pinto Mountains State Park officially opened to visitors on March 1, giving residents of Collin County a fresh destination for outdoor adventure less than two hours away. Spanning 4,871 acres between Abilene and the Dallas–Fort Worth area, the park transforms former ranch land into a scenic landscape of rolling hills, hardwood forests, and wide open Texas sky.

A Project Years in the Making

The debut of Palo Pinto Mountains State Park represents a significant milestone for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. It marks the first new state park to open in North Texas in more than two decades.

The journey to opening began years ago. In 2008, Texas Parks and Wildlife partnered with The Nature Conservancy to identify and secure land suitable for a future state park. By 2011, the property that would become Palo Pinto Mountains State Park had officially been acquired.

Funding for construction came from a combination of sources, including legislative appropriations, Sporting Goods Sales Tax revenue, federal funding, and $10 million in private donations raised by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation.

While the park was initially expected to open in 2023, construction timelines pushed the launch back slightly. Now that the gates are open for both day use and overnight stays, visitors can finally experience the long-anticipated destination.

A formal grand opening celebration is expected to take place later this spring.

A Landscape That Feels Different From Collin County

Located in the Cross Timbers region, the terrain at Palo Pinto Mountains State Park offers a landscape that feels noticeably different from the flatter areas of Collin County.

Juniper-covered hills rise above hardwood bottomlands, creating scenic elevation changes throughout the park. Palo pinto trees, which give the park its name, add unique visual interest year-round with green foliage, bluish cone-like berries, and reddish bark.

Seasonal changes bring even more beauty to the landscape. Spring often paints the hillsides with wildflowers such as Indian blankets, yellow coneflowers, prickly poppies, lemon beebalm, and evening primrose.

In the fall, visitors can expect deep reds and warm gold tones as red oaks, flameleaf sumac, pecans, and cedar elms change color. During the summer months, birdwatchers may also spot migrating species, including the endangered golden-cheeked warbler.

Outdoor Activities for Every Kind of Visitor

Palo Pinto Mountains State Park was designed with a wide range of visitors in mind. The park includes more than 16 miles of trails suitable for hikers, mountain bikers, and casual walkers alike.

Some trails are short, family-friendly loops that can be completed in roughly 30 minutes, while others extend deeper into the park’s hills and provide more challenging terrain along with scenic views.

At the center of the park is the 90-acre Tucker Lake, offering a peaceful setting for fishing, swimming, and paddling. To maintain the quiet and natural environment, motorized boats are not permitted on the lake.

Visitors will find a courtesy dock and an ADA-accessible kayak launch, making it easier for more people to enjoy time on the water. Whether casting a fishing line or simply cooling off on a warm Texas afternoon, Tucker Lake offers a relaxing way to experience the park.

Stay Overnight and Make a Weekend of It

For those who want more than a day trip, the park offers several overnight options. Visitors can choose from new RV campsites, walk-in tent sites, or more primitive camping areas for a back-to-nature experience.

Additional amenities include picnic areas, a pavilion, playgrounds, and gathering spaces that are ideal for group outings, family reunions, or weekend getaways.

Because the park is newly opened, a few finishing touches are still underway. Visitors are encouraged to follow posted guidelines and exercise caution in areas where improvements are still being completed.

Planning Your Visit

Park officials expect strong attendance during Spring Break and throughout the coming months. To avoid capacity limits, visitors are encouraged to reserve day passes in advance through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reservation system or by contacting their customer service center.

Frequent park visitors may also consider purchasing a Texas State Parks Pass. The $70 annual pass covers entrance fees for the passholder and everyone in their vehicle for an entire year and includes discounts on camping and park store purchases.

For residents of McKinney, Frisco, Prosper, Allen, and surrounding North Texas communities, Palo Pinto Mountains State Park offers something special. It’s a brand-new destination that provides the feeling of escaping into the Texas wilderness without having to travel far from home.

While visitors can begin exploring the park now, an official grand opening celebration is expected later this spring.
